Your Postgraduate Support System

Your Postgraduate Support System

I recently posted about a conversation I had with a PhD Candidate about the need for support structures while completing a postgraduate degree. You can read the LinkedIn post here.

The responses I received in the comments and in conversations with other Postgrads have made me think about the need to highlight the support you do have. As a masters or PhD candidate you may feel incredibly isolated and may think you need to do everything on your own. Although there are sections you will have to do on your own, and processes you will have to go through with limited input, you do have resources in the form of support services that can help you navigate through these processes.

Let's explore the key players who can guide you towards success:

  • Supervisors/Advisors: Your academic mentors, offering expertise, feedback, and encouragement. They'll help you define your research topic, develop methodologies, and ensure academic rigor. Be sure to set up regular conversations with your supervisors or advisors to discuss your progress and your thinking processes.
  • University/Institution: Your academic home, offering resources like libraries, databases, and workshops. They also set the guidelines and deadlines for your thesis journey. Make sure that you are aware of the services they provide, what you can access and what their deliverables and guidelines are.
  • Peers/Colleagues: Fellow graduate students who understand the struggles and triumphs of thesis life. They can be sounding boards, sources of moral support, and collaborators.
  • Participants/Subjects: The individuals or groups who contribute data and perspectives to your research. Treat them with respect and prioritize ethical considerations.
  • Funding Agencies/Sponsors: Organizations that provide financial support for your research. Understand their expectations and fulfill reporting requirements as needed.
  • Professional Organizations/Industry Partners: Entities with a vested interest in your research topic. They can offer access to resources, potential collaboration opportunities, and real-world applications of your findings.
  • Librarians and Research Support Staff: Invaluable resources for navigating academic literature, managing citations, and strengthening your information literacy skills.
  • Research consultation services. Research consultants or coaches that can help you set yourself up for success, help you develop skills and understand the institutional expectations.
  • Family and Friends: Your emotional cheerleaders! They provide a listening ear, celebrate milestones, and offer a welcome perspective outside the academic world. They're crucial for your well-being and work-life balance.

By recognizing these stakeholders and actively seeking their support, you empower yourself to navigate the thesis journey with greater confidence and success. Remember, you're not alone in this endeavour!
